AI as a Skill: Let’s Stop and Think Beyond the Prompt in Learning, Work, and Docs
This presentation explores AI as a professional skill from the perspective of a young adult who entered higher education and the job market as generative AI became widely available. Drawing on academic experience and work in the IT industry, it examines how AI is reshaping learning, early career expectations, and technical documentation. Tools such as large language models and AI agents can help technical writers produce content faster and streamline parts of their workflow. However, they also introduce new challenges. AI does not eliminate the need for expertise; instead, it changes the skills expected from both newcomers and experienced professionals. Using AI may become as common as using other workplace tools, but effective use still requires understanding, judgment, and responsibility. The presentation considers expectations surrounding AI agents, the development of AI tools, and the importance of approaching this changing environment critically rather than treating AI as a simple solution.
She has an academic background in Computer Science and plans to continue her education with a focus on project management. She currently works at IBM as a Technical Writer and has nearly three years of professional experience in technical documentation.
