Release note: A technical writing genre of its own?

What comes to mind when we talk about technical writing genres? In this context, a technical writer usually thinks of various topic types or API reference standards. At least, that was the case for me a few months ago. Then, I became heavily involved in producing release notes.
In this talk, I'm going to identify and discuss the main formal and stylistic traits of release notes. To this end, I'm going to compare various release notes produced by various companies and targeted at various audiences. I'm also going to compare release notes with other types of content that technical writers create on a daily basis.
